Doping Control
Doha, February 2006: In order to ensure fair and safe competition during the
15th Asian Games Doha 2006, a training workshop has been conducted by the Doping
Control team at Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee (DAGOC) to evaluate the
International Doping Control Officers who will participate in Doha 2006 to be
held from 1 to 15 December 2006.
The workshop was attended by a total of 17 International Doping Control Officers
from Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, Chinese Taipei, Iran and Japan. It was designed to
evaluate the skills and knowledge needed for the doping control program and
identify suitable candidates for inclusion in the Doha 2006 International Doping
Control Officer Program.
"It is our goal to implement an effective Doping Control Program during Doha
2006, in accordance with the Anti-Doping Rules of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA),
and thereby contribute to fair, equal and healthy competition for all athletes
who participate in The Games," said Dr. Abdulwahab Almusleh Healthcare and
Doping Program Manager at DAGOC.
"The DAGOC Doping Control team is currently in the process of evaluating Doping
Control Officers from Asia to ensure that the 30 international officers who are
invited to participate in Doha 2006 are of the highest calibre", continued Dr.
Almusleh. After the evaluation period, DAGOC will begin to issue invitations for
the program and confirm the function and position of each individual selected.
Historically, doping control programs have been largely concerned with
monitoring for the presence of prohibited substances. However, in recent years,
the role of these programs has been expanded to cover attempted use of a
prohibited substance or method, reporting those who refuse to submit a sample
collection; ensuring athletes do not tamper with any part of the process and
identify instances of trafficking.
The DAGOC Doping Control team expects to administer over 1000 tests to athletes
prior to and during the Games. Doping Control Centers will be established in
each competition venue and village polyclinic during Doha 2006 Games. Another
workshop will be held later this year in November in order to start the training
before the competitions.
Doping Control was one of the key procedures tested during the 3rd West Asian
Games held in Doha in December 2005. Members of DAGOC Doping Control team have
also provided testing at football matches, athletics events, handball,
basketball and weightlifting competitions, as well as wrestling and cycling
events held in Qatar and abroad. The experience in the varied events has
provided essential field training for doping control personnel and allowed DAGOC
to test all aspects of the systems and procedures that will be used in Doha 2006
Games.
